Erik "Big E" Elken
Erik Elken — known to most as “Big E” — was a devoted teammate, a fierce competitor, and someone who brought energy, kindness, and optimism into every room he entered. Rugby was more than a sport to Erik - it was a community built on trust, resilience, and shared purpose, values he embodied both on and off the field. He had a natural ability to make people feel welcome, supported, and valued, leaving a lasting impression on teammates, friends, and families alike.

In January 2025, what began as an MRI to evaluate a hip injury unexpectedly revealed a rare and aggressive sarcoma in his femur, with additional involvement in surrounding tissue and lymph nodes. What followed was a long and complex medical journey that included multiple rounds of chemotherapy, major surgery, and ongoing treatment guided by leading orthopedic oncology specialists.

Throughout it all, Erik remained remarkably himself. He focused on encouraging others, stayed grounded in faith, and continued to show up for the people and community he loved. Even during the most difficult moments, his positivity and strength lifted those around him — something his care teams often noted as extraordinary.

Erik passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, surrounded by love. In the months that followed, his teammates and friends came together to create the Big E Memorial Invitational — a reflection of the profound impact he had on their lives and the bond he helped build within the rugby community. Erik lived with purpose, generosity, and heart, accomplishing more in his 22 years than many do in a lifetime. This event stands as a celebration of who he was and a promise that the spirit he brought to others will continue to inspire connection, resilience, and community for years to come.
